These eruptions produce ash clouds, lava flows, and booming noises. The volcano's regular eruptions and accessible location have made it a major tourist attraction. The volcano is 1633 meters high. In recorded history, this volcano was dormant from 1525 until, in 1968, it erupted killing 78 people. Mount Arenal is one of thirteen active and dormant volcanoes in Costa Rica.
