Walrus head (Odobenus rosmarus) killed by Eskimos; Diomede Island, Alaska, USA. Although Alaska Natives (Inuits, Aleuts or Eskimos) may legally kill walrus, doing so solely for the ivory is considered wasteful by the US Fish & Wildlife Service, and is illegal. The practice is commonly called "head hunting." Many traditional uses of the walrus have faced with access to modern technology, but tusk carving and engraving remains a vital (and lucrative) art form.
