The "smoke" of the Great Smoky Mountains is actually a foggy haze that swirls among the complex of ridges of the mountains. Fifty years ago, visitors could see for 90 miles. Now, 8-12 miles is average, although the increased pollution does create spectacular sunrises and sunsets.
