This groundwater amphipod, Crangonyx attenuatus, was encountered in a cave in Tennessee. This is a female brooding young, or "in berry." Parental care is not uncommon in crustaceans. Cave species often times have fewer offspring than surface relatives, this female has fewer than 10 young. This specimen was photographed in a Tennessee cave, 2012.
