An adult Eastern Box Turtle (Terrapene carolina) photographed in June in the wild near Colby Creek south of Topeka, Kansas in the Wakarusa Valley of northeast Kansas. In the past turtles have been classifed by biologists and herpetologists as reptiles, but recent research involving DNA indicates that they should be in a classification of their own. That new classification, which is becoming more widely accepted, is Chelonia.
