Female Pyrrhuloxia (Cardinalis sinuatus) are a grayish brown, and sometimes mistaken for a female Northern Cardinal. Females have red highlights on the thighs and wing linings. The bill is heavy and hooked in both the male and female. In the female, the bill is a dull yellow. Both male and female have the diagnostic tall crest on the head.
