Eastern Gray Squirrels (Sciurus carolinensis) usually live in forests, but they are also seen in yards, gardens, and city parks: anywhere there are large, deciduous trees. They are known to visit birdfeeders, dig up flower bulbs, and steal garden vegetables. From time to time, Eastern Gray Squirrels have short battles over tree cavities with Pileated Woodpeckers which usually end up in victory for the squirrel. Eastern Gray Squirrels live in trees year-round, either in cavities or nests they build out of leaves usually high up in tree crotches. Ludlow, MA.
