A highly endangered flightless bird, the takahe (Porphyrio hochstetteri) is one of many endangered species New Zealand's Mount Bruce Conservation Centre. Once thought to be extinct, it was rediscovered in 1948 near Lake Te Anau in South Island. After captive breeding, the species has been reintroduced to predator-free islands including Tiritiri and Kapiti.
