One of the many color forms of the the Erato Longwing Butterfly (Heliconius erato). This form is frequently referred to as the Postman. The conspicuous colors warn potential predators of their distasteful and toxic flesh (aposematic coloration). Heliconids are often called passion vine butterflies since the caterpillars of all species feed upon these plants. The Erato Longwing ranges from Central America south through much of tropical South America. Photo taken in Costa Rica.
