Side and belly scales of a Northern Ringneck Snake (Diadophis punctatus edwardsii) from New York. This species is rarely found in the open. When disturbed, a ringneck may flip over and show off its bright underbelly, which causes the attacker to recoil in surprise. If picked up, it will secret musk and foul-smelling contents of the cloaca.
