Great Gray Owl (Strix nebulosa). Standing 27 inches tall with a wingspan of 52 inches, this is our longest owl. When populations of their prey (voles) crash in the boreal forests where these owls nest, they often move south in search of food. This owl was photographed in northern Minnesota during one of the largest invasions on record in the winter of 2004/2005.
