The little blue heron (Egretta caerulea) is one of the most numerous herons in the Southeastern U.S. and may be observed in large mixed concentrations of herons and egrets. It is 25-30" tall, slate blue with maroon neck; bill grayish with black tip; legs greenish. Immature bird is white, usually with dusky tips on primaries. Young birds acquiring adult plumage usually have a piebald appearance. It eats mostly insects usually foraging alone in marshes. Corkscrew Swamp, FL.
