Close up view of the owl butterfly (Caligo eurilochus), so called for its large hindwing "eyespots". Like all adult insects, butterflies have six legs. However, all members of the family Nymphalidae have reduced forelegs, covered with scales, modified as chemoreceptors for "tasting". These reduced legs often give the butterfly the appearance of having only four legs.
