Termitariums of the magnetic termite (Amitermes meridionalis) dominate the landscape in the dry monsoon open forested plains of Litchfield National Park, Northern Territory, Australia, after dry season fires. Such complex structures provide flood and fire protection and microclimate control for the soft-bodied termites, aided by their alignment, which faces low-angle morning and evening sunlight while avoiding the hot sunlight of high noon.
