Steam escaping from underground pipes through vented manhole covers on a street in downtown Detroit, Michigan. Steam energy, which has been available in Detroit for more than a century, is provided by Detroit Thermal (as of 2017). The building in the background is The Argonaut Building, later known as the A. Alfred Taubman Center for Design Education. The Art Deco style building was designed by renowned architect Albert Kahn for General Motors and constructed between 1928 and 1936.
