MADONNA OF THANKS Depiction of the image of Mary Santissina of Montenero; adorned countless votive offerings made by the faithful for Grace received. According to legend; around 1340 a crippled shepherd would have found the painting in the Livornese campaign; and the same Madonna asked him to bring on Montenero the heavy stone in which was embedded his image; despite the painful toil for his lame leg; the pious Dore would take on the mountain; also called "the mountain of the devil" because receptacle of thieves and robbers; just arrived in the place where now stands the shrine of Our Lady of Grace; the guards; the shepherd would hear the bells ringing suits of Livorno; discovering with joy and wonder that his leg was healed.
