Ovcar-Kablar Gorge (Ovcarsko-kablarska klisura) in Central Western Serbia is located between the cities of Cacak (17 km east) and Po啪ega (west) and is around 155 km southwest of Belgrade. The gorge is part of West Morava River; Western Serbia. Since 14th century; more than 300 monasteries have been built along the gorge; making it the "Serbian Mount Athos" and an extraordinary place for the Serbian Orthodox Church and religion. One of the major monasteries is the Nikolje Monastery (Saint Nicholas the Miracleworker Monastery) which is located on the left bank of the gorge; around 2 km upstream of the village of Jovanje; in the foothills of Kablar mountain. it dates back to 1476 and was a big monastery with around 300 monks; in 19th century. Today; only 8 monks are living here. The monastery is famous for its frescoes (crypt of the St. Nicholas monastery church: 1587 and 1637); narthex 1637; nave 1697. The Nikolje Monastery became famous for the 禄Gospel of Nikolje芦 which was written here (today in Dublin; Ireland). From 1815 to 1817; the monastery was a hiding place for the leader of the Second Serbian Uprising; Prince Milos Obrenovic. The monastery church is believed to be the oldest one in the whole gorge.
