Jhansi was an independent princely state ruled by Maratha Newalkar dynasty under suzerainty of British India from 1804 till 1853; when British took over the State under terms of Doctrine of Lapse.
The fortified town of Jhansi served as its capital. The Jhansi was; however; was reclaimed and ruled by Rani Laxmi Bai (one of the leading figure Revolt of 1857) from August 1857 to June 1858. Pictures From History M. L. Rousselet
