Gian Lorenzo Bernini (1598-1680) Honor and Glory of Italy; the tomb of Matilda of Canossa in St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican. At his death in 1115; Matilda gave all his possessions to the Papal State. She was buried in the Abbey of San Benedetto Po at Mantova; but his remains were moved first to Castel Sant'Angelo and then finally to San Pietro in Vatican; and placed together with those of the apostles and martyrs of the faith; on the initiative of Pope Urban VIII in 1645.
