Americans will study here. An experiment which will do much to foster Anglo-American understanding has begun with the arrival in London five Americans to take up scholarships at Ruskin College. The scholarships are the gift of Sir Robert Mayer, the man who is provided orchestral concerts for children for 25 years. All the Americans are trade unionists and well here they will have opportunities to study British trade unionism, labour relations and social conditions in industry. A committee formed by Sir Robert and including Mr R A Butler, former Minister of Education will watch the planned development. Photo shows, the five American scholars, pictured with Sir Robert Mayer (centre) before leaving their London hotel for Oxford today (Wednesday). They are, left to right, Miss Homerta F Watson (Kentucky), James Tyree (Michigan), Gerald G Redlin (Montana), Miss Lucille Thornburgh (Tennessee) and Robert E Repas (Wisconsin). 24 September 1947
