Probably the most fitting start to represent England pictorially is the beautiful old world village of Lacock, Wiltshire, home of William Henry Fox Talbot, he invented photography at the same time as Frenchman Daguerre. Court here in this charming contrasting study showing the old and the new, outwardly life has changed little in this centuries-old village now owned by the national trust. A few years ago the British Council made a photographic record of village life to be circulated overseas as evidence of what an English village is like since then it has been the mecca of artists and photographers from all parts of the world who have tried to betray the beauty behind the old stone and timbered houses dating back to the time of the Magna Carta nearly 800 years ago. 17 August 1947
