The dramatic saving of Diana. United States saving of the 8528 t steamer 'American farmer' (bound for Britain with a cargo, including 8000 tons of food) after she had been abandoned by her crew in mid ocean. Following a collision with her sister ship, may lead to a complicated legal tangle involving salvage experts on both sides of the Atlantic. First to reach the derelict was the Cardiff steamer 'Elizabeth' (2039 t), her master, Capt Hillers, put a crew on board and took her in time, shortly afterwards, the United States steamer 'American Ranger'came alongside and, it is alleged, her boarding party hold down the red ensign and hoisted the American flag in its place. The 'Elizabeth' side onto Barry, South Wales, and the 'American Farmer' was escorted into Falmouth, Cornwall, by the 'American Ranger' and the US destroyer 'Perry'. Photo shows, the American Farmer well down in the water entering found today (Thursday). 8 August 1946
