British cruisers worldwide task. Cruisers like these have added another great chapter to naval history with this week's action against Italians in the Mediterranean. This type of ship has a worldwide task ranging from such brilliant actions of the battles of the River Plate and Cape Matapan to the hard slogging duties of tracking down enemy surface raiders in the South Atlantic and Indian Ocean, and escorting important convoys. HMS cruisers Exeter, Ajax, and Achilles, finished the pocket battleship Admiral Graf Spee, cruiser Dorsetshire, administered the coop to grace to the Bismarck and also sunk a German raider caught in the Atlantic. HMS cruiser Devonshire more recently sank another raider in the South Atlantic. Similarly HMS cruiser Cornwall sunk an enemy armed merchant cruiser in the Indian Ocean, and rescued 27 British seamen who were prisoners on board. It is HMS Australian cruiser Sydney which fought and beat two Italian cruisers, sinking one of them, the Bartolomeo Colleoni in the Mediterranean early in this war, and a few months ago sunk enemy raiders in Australian waters just before she was lost. Cruisers also played a big part in the gallant evacuation from Greece and Crete. In the Battle of Cape Matapan, cruisers lured the Italian battle fleet towards our own battleships playing a vital part in this historic engagement.
