Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam , the first Prime Minister of the newly-independent sugar island of Mauritius , makes his opening speech during the Indian Ocean isle 's independence celebrations in Port Louis 12th March 1966 . The island became independent on 12th March , to end more that 150 years of British colonial rule .
