This photo was taken as Professor Klaus Hansen of the University of Norway took his life in his hands and drank a quantity of heavy water for the first time in human experience - other doctors stood by with stomach pumps and drugs to revive the professor in case the dose showed signs of proving fatal - so far Professor Hansen has displayed no ill effects but he is being closely watched by his colleagues - heavy water is water which has been electrified by a constant charge of current until its specific gravity is increased many times - photo shows Professor Hansen ( in foreground with glasses ) preparing the heavy water which he drank in his laboratory in Oslo January 27th 1935
