Airlift of US Marines in Cuba. Although Russian ships turned back from the coast of Cuba, thus averting what might have become a bloody battle, the American fighting units, among them the Marines, were nevertheless ready for immediate action. How the marines were prepared - for any anticipated interceptions of the Cuba blockade made by Presiden Kennedy - are shown in this picture of the airlift of US marines to the naval air station in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. The marines are seen here being briefed by Brigadier General W R Collins, USMC, Commander of Marine gorud forces at the Guantanamo Naval Base. 25th October 1962
