American Soldiers display a Japanese flag which once flow atop the battered enemy headquarters (background) near Hollandia, Northern New Guinea, where U.S. amphibious forces pushed ashore on April 22, 1944. The building, shattered by U.S. pre-landing bombardment, formerly housed the Japanese officer commanding enemy troops in that area of the Southwest Pacific Island. Japanese soldiers abandoned large quantities of food, weapons and ammunition in their retreat from Northern New Guinea coastal areas as U.S. troops drove inland from Hollandia and Aitapo, more than 100 miles to the coast. 17 May 1944
