London's first official air raid shelter opened at Caxton Hall. The first air raid shelters to be built for a London local authority were opened by the Mayor of Westminster, Councillor HSE Vanderpant, at Caxton Hall. The shelters consist of a steel lined gallery, and can withstand tremendous pressure. They have analogues to keep out gas, and luminous plane affords emergency lighting. The purpose of the shelters is to demonstrate to occupiers of businesses and other premises the type of shelter available for the protection of personnel.
