Five hundred men relay 80 miles of rail in four days as LNER make big change over Tyneside . Five hundred men are engaged near Newcastle on one of the most complex high speed enginearing jobs carried out in Britain for some time . Eighty miles of steel conductor rail is being taken up and relaid in four days . To conform with modern standards the conductor rail throughout the whole length of the LNER electrified lines on Tyneside is being taken up and moved 3 1 / 4 inches nearer the running rail . Fifty thousand insulators have to be removed and the whole of the continuity track cables require to be adjusted in position accrodingly .
