Though many times in his long careeer he had been sent into exile by the disfavour of his countryman and had died on foreign soil in Paris . M Eleutherios Venizelos , most celebrated statesman of modern Greece , was laid to rest in his native island of Crete with all the homour that his peasant compatriots could do to him . Peasants acted as bearers , thousands of peasants followed the cortege from the port of Canes . The Royal House of Greece was represented by Crown Prince Prince Paul , brother of King George .
