City of Drobeta Turnu Severin; Romania: new Epsicopal Cathedral Great Martyr St. George; built 1992 - 2009; The building of the new Orthodox Church of Drobeta on the place on top end of Independence Street initiated in 1992. Bells were brought from Innsbruck (Austria); in 2009. The outstanding building is dedicated as well to the city patron Severin. Background Drobeta Turnu Severin: city of Drobeta Turnu Severin (86 500 inhabitants) is a very young town. It was built as a result of a decree; issued on 22nd of April; 1833. Background was the treaty of Adrianople in 1829; which declared the city finally part of Austro-Hungarian Empire; after 300 years of Ottoman occupation. A huge city construction program started in 1836; a new Danube port (see Drobeta; Sightseeing) was built starting in 1856; even all churches had to be built new; as there was none in this very old; for some even the oldest Christian community of Romania. Ctiy Hall; palaces and merchant houses were built; railway and passenger ship transport arrived; and in 1900; Turnu Severin; as it was called by decision in 1833; was the most important Romanian river port; at all. Even with beginning of WW I (Great War); the city icon number one; the so called "water castle"; was erected. Drobeta was even a cultural place of excellence; stating with the Lyceum Traian; which became one of the most important and renown schools in Romania; and continuing with the wonderful Palace of Culture; the city theatre; which could built thanks to citizens' sponsorship; in 1924. Museums; English style parks; hotels; restaurants and infrastructure made it the westernmost town of Romania. Even after WW II; when Drobeta lost some of its economic importance; some jewels were added to the city account; with the most outstanding Kinetic Fountain; today the real icon of town; to mention first.
