Gandan Monastery (or Gandantegchinlen Khid) means 'the great place of complete joy). It is the largest and most important monastery in Mongolia. Built by the fifth Bogd Khaan it dates from 1838. This shrine is dedicated to Tsongkhapa (1357-1419); founder of Gelugpa or Yellow Hat Sect of Buddhism.
