Ireland, Downpatrick area, St Patrick's Grave - Only 15mins drive from Oakleigh House is Downpatrick. Saint Patrick began his missionary work after his boat was swept into Strangford Lough by strong currents. The local chief gave him a barn and for 30 years he converted the Irish to Christianity. He died at Saul in 461 and was buried in Downpatrick. See the ruins of St Tassach's church, one of Irelands earliest Christian churches at Raholp near Saul. At Saul is a replica of an early church from where St Patrick preached to the Irish. Down Cathedral is late18th century restoration of a Benedictine Monastery bu ilt in 1183. In the graveyard is the grave of St Patrick marked by a stone slab. The cathedral has magnificent stained glass windows, box pews and organ. St Patrick's church, Saul St. Patrick's grave.
