The 13 and a half foot by 18 inch canister containing the 26 kiloton nuclear explosive for the Project Gasbuggy natural gas stimulation experiment is about to be lowered into the 4,200 foot deep emplacement hole. Personnel from the AEC's Nevada Operations Office were responsible for the overall field management of the experiment, including on site and public safety security and construction. The experiment was conducted in northwestern New Mexico in December 1967. The Nevada Operations Office is responsible for all nuclear detonation experiments in the United States, including Plowshare experiments to develop peaceful uses for nuclear explosives such as Gasbuggy.
