Les Halles. Time for a rest - an elderly porter with his wooden carrying frame is sitting on a "diable" (barrow) reading a newspaper. The carrying frame is strapped on to his back with leather shoulder straps. The base of the frame when not in use is pulled up, secured with thick string that the porter has brought across his back and put in his right hand pocket. The height of the frame suggests that several boxes can be piled up and secured with the string. He would not load the frame himself but someone would do this for him. Part of the entrance to the Baltard pavilions is just visible on the right above the parked van. The van is open at the back. Rue Rambuteau, Quartier des Halles, 1er arrondissement, Right Bank, Paris, France, circa 1960s.
