Les Halles in the morning. A market trader at his desk smiles back. He is laughing over his accounts which are laid out on a makeshift desk balanced on top of wooden crates. An enamel sign on the front of his desk reads "A. Clement, approvisionneur, Mortcerf, Seine-et-Marne." He is a supplier. Photographer Harold Chapman recalls that initially the merchant pretended to be angry, calling out, "Qu'est-ce que vous faites, connasse..." but soon mellowed and his face broke into a smile after Harold Chapman explained that he was photographing the man's beautiful stall. Carreau forain, Quartier des Halles, 1er arrondissement, Right Bank, Paris, France, circa 1960s.
