Early morning with the 19th century Palais Garnier in the background and four busts by the French sculptor Louis-Felix Chabaud with the words Academie Nationale de Musique. The sculptures represent the composers Beethoven, Mozart, Spontini and Meyerbeer. An elderly man wearing a trilby hat and dark glasses has been feeding the pigeons in the Place de l'Opera near the Opera House. Into the hat band are tucked his train tickets. He is standing by the wall bordering the access to the Opera Metro station. At this time feeding the pigeons in Paris was allowed but became forbidden later in 1963. Photographer Harold Chapman recalls that he went to take the picture because he had heard it was going to be forbidden but it soon proved impossible to enforce as there were too many pigeons in Paris which provided happiness and joy to many elderly people. Place de l'Opera, 9e arrondissement, Right Bank, Paris, France, 1963.
