Beach volleyball on Muscle Beach, Santa Monica, California. 1940s, The beach was the nearest strip of seaside to Hollywood and was a magnet for movie hopefuls wanting to show off their toned and tanned good looks. Santa Monica is the official birthplace of beach volleyball as it is played today, the first proper volleyball courts were set up on the beach there in 1920 and the first two man teams were introduced.
