King Arthur's Cave near Whitchurch in Herefordshire. Cave or Rock Shelter in Herefordshire. The cave is situated at the foot of a low cliff at the north-western end of Lord's Wood on the hill of Great Doward at Whitchurch near the River Wye. It consists of a broad entrance platform, a double interconnected entrance and two main chambers. The platform entrance lies 300 feet above the Wye and faces the north west commanding a good view of the saddle-back of Great Doward Hill. All of the deposits that have filled this cave seem to be either Late Pleistocene or more recent. This cave was inhabited from the Upper Palaeolithic to the Bronze Age, a period of over 50,000 years. Finds here include bone, flint and "imported" pebbles. Caves nearby have also yielded Beaker and Roman pottery, but as this cave was also used to extract iron in the 18th and 19th centuries much archaeological evidence has been destroyed. ?005 Credit:TopFoto / Fortean
