The Russian State Department Store known as GUM is at Red Square, Moscow. Over 65 million people shop there each year. It is the country's largest store and sells practically anything under the sun - and there is free delivery too. Built under a system of arcades it is completely under glass on three floors, with interconnecting bridges for the floors and long arcades running off each avenue. The shops are all independent units and have various motives into the design. Fountains play at the several "roads" which intersects the building. The store appeared to be doing good business and there were plenty of goods on display. Picture shows champagne or ice cream for the tired shopper. Even teenagers were served at the champagne bar-but it is only wine with the "fizz" added. (Photo by John Topham) [shopping, shops, supermarkets, bar, communism, 60s] June 1964
