Choeung Ek; Cambodia; skulls in memorial stupa for victims of the Khmer Rouge. On the outskirts of Phnom Penh; the site was a former orchard which is the best known of the Khmer Rouge Killing Fields. Several mass graves were found here with victims from the mid-to-late 1970s. Many of the skulls were found shattered and smashed. In the 1980s; a large Buddhist stupa was built here as a memorial; with 5000 skulls enshrined inside. Those pictured are on the lowest level; and the signs note the skulls of Kampuchean women; one between 20 and 40; the other 40 and 60. Photo 2013.
