Choeung Ek; Cambodia; skulls in memorial stupa for victims of the Khmer Rouge. On the outskirts of Phnom Penh; the site was a former orchard which is the best known of the Khmer Rouge Killing Fields. Several mass graves were found here with victims from the mid-to-late 1970s. Many of the skulls were found shattered and smashed. In the 1980s; a large Buddhist stupa was built here as a memorial; with 5000 skulls enshrined inside. Those pictured are on the lowest level; and the sign notes the skull of a 60-year-old woman killed for being a senile Kampuchean. Photo 2013.
