White-fronted bee-eater (Merops bullockoides) perched on a branch with a butterfly in its beak. This colourful bird is found from Kenya to South Africa, where it nests in colonies in the banks of rivers and streams. As their name suggests, bee-eaters predominantly feed on flying insects, especially bees and wasps. They remove the sting from the bee by hitting it on a hard surface, where the pressure of the impact extracts most of the venom from the sting.
