Long-billed curlews (Numenius americanus) in flight. This large shorebird is a migrant, breeding in prairies and grasslands in south-western Canada and the western USA. In the winter it travels south to Mexico and the southern USA, living by estuaries and beaches. It feeds on invertebrates and berries when in grasslands, and uses its long bill to probe mud for crabs, worms and molluscs when it inhabits coastal areas. Photographed in Baja California, Mexico.
