Jonathan Swift (1667-1745), Anglo-Irish satirist, essayist and cleric. Swift was born in Dublin. His father had died some months before his birth, so he was raised by his uncle. He attended Kilkenny College and Trinity College, Dublin, moving to England in 1688 where he worked as a secretary and, after being ordained in 1694, as a priest. His writings were political and satirical, the most famous of which is "Gulliver's Travels, " although many were written anonymously or under pseudonyms. His style, deadpan and ironic, is known as 'Swiftian' satire.
