Web servers and cables. Optical fibres used for rapid telecommunications including data transmission over the internet, rely on rare earth elements. Sections of the optical fibre are doped with an element such as erbium to amplify the signal. Data storage depends on the rare earth element neodymium, used for the magnets in computer hard drives.
