Common dormouse (Muscardinus avellanarius) climbing in wild cherry branches. Living up to five years, this rodent may spend up to three-quarters of its life asleep, hibernating when food is scarce. It grows to a length of about eight centimetres and lives in woodland and hedgerows throughout Europe. Dormice spend most of their time in the tree canopy, eating insects, seed, flowers and fruits.
