Shuttlecock sugarbush seed. Seed of the shuttlecock sugarbush, (Protea aurea subspecies aurea) a shrub occurring in mountain fynbos, endemic to the Cape Provinces of South Africa. The shuttlecock sugarbush bears flowers which attract birds such as orange-breasted sunbirds (Anthobaphes violacea), which come to feed on the nectar, and carry out pollination. The seeds of the shuttlecock sugarbush are dispersed by the wind. Wildfires kill the plant, but the seeds survive to start a new generation.
