Mediterranean Sea, 17th-century map. Divided into the West Sea and East Sea, seas named include Spanish Sea, Sea of Barbary, Sea of Sardinia, Sea of Marseille and Provence, Sea of Tuscany, Sea of Africa, Sea of Sicily, Gulf of Venice, Ionian Sea, Gulf of Sidra, Sea of Libya, Sea of Candia (Crete), Sea of Scarpanto, Sea of Egypt, and Sea of Syria. The Black Sea is given with its classical name Pontus Euxinus. Ottoman conquests are also shown ('Turkey in Europe'). The map was prepared in 1680 for King James II by British cartographer William Berry (bottom left). The note at top right indicates that this map was based on that by French cartographer Nicolas Sanson.
