Slate waste at France's famous 600 year Angers quarry. Slate is a low-grade metamorphic rock that is formed by shale heated by a few hundred degrees. It has very strong cleavage but just 10% of the mined stone is of sufficient quality. The orange colour is formed by oxadised iron sulphides - which can damage thin slates.
